With the advent of winter, illnesses such as the common cold, runny nose, or flu become commonplace. It’s hard not to get sick when everyone seems to sneeze or cough. Fortunately, essential oils can help us reboot our immune system, as well as ward off unpleasant symptoms so that we feel better throughout the season.

Essential oils are becoming increasingly popular as they offer an affordable and natural way to enhance your health. A lot of research has proven their powerful healing properties, and they smell just great! In the cold winter months, our essential oils will warm you up and help kill all harmful bacteria.

Ginger oil
Ginger root has a warming quality that helps increase heat in the body. Ginger oil contains compounds such as b-phellandrene and zingiberene, which make it an excellent expectorant (which helps to thin the mucus), decongestant, and antiviral.

Cinnamon oil
With compounds such as cinnamaldehyde and cinnamacetate, which help increase circulation while providing antibacterial and antiviral benefits, cinnamon oil is another warming spice that can be used to treat the symptoms of colds and flu. For maximum benefit, apply this oil or carefully dilute it with a carrier oil and massage your legs, arms and joints.

Eucalyptus oil
This cleansing and immunostimulating oil has antiviral properties and is great for cleansing. In general, eucalyptus oil helps calm the respiratory system when the cold and flu season comes. Apply this oil or massage into the skin with carrier oil on areas such as the nose, forehead, chest, and back.

Tea tree oil
Compounds in tea tree oil fight bacteria in the air and help fight infection. It is a powerful antiseptic, an excellent bronchodilator (which means easier breathing!) And an expectorant. You can use tea tree oil with a massage or carrier oil in areas such as the chest, neck, back, and sinuses.

Thyme oil
Thyme oil is another excellent treatment for infections of the upper respiratory tract and colds, which can be caused by the immunostimulating compound terpene-thymol. Thyme oil has traditionally been used to treat the symptoms of colds and flu, such as mucus in the chest and cough. Dilute with a carrier oil and massage into the chest, back, and neck for best results.

Bergamot oil
Bergamot is another essential oil that has healing properties for colds and flu. Studies have shown that, when evaporated, bergamot oil effectively destroys the bacteria that cause the flu virus in just 10 minutes! Moreover, compounds such as pinene, terpineol, and geraniol eliminate stagnant phenomena and have powerful antibacterial and analgesic properties.

Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is another miracle cure for colds and flu. It contains compounds such as menthol, which give the herb a minty smell and taste, and are also potent analgesics with expectorant, decongestant, and antibacterial properties. Peppermint oil can also help reduce fever! To use peppermint essential oil for the symptoms of a cold or flu, sprinkle it by massaging your feet or upper respiratory tract using a carrier oil or add a few drops to a warm bath.
